The story focuses on Svetlana, a 42-year old neurologist who is struggling in her marriage. When her employer sends her to a refresher course, she asks her professor provocative questions regarding the human brain. The professor believes that human behavior is genetically conditioned by the reproduction instinct, arguing that our brain tries to protect itself from all other work but that of finding a mate. The modern society, on the other hand, comes into conflict with nature by forcing models on gender equality on women, thus making them pursue their careers instead of childbirth. His statements provoke animated discussions in the class. Svetlana, who is childless and whose husband takes no notice of her, has been secretly seeing another man for a few years. Her mother advises her to take the professor's words to heart and become a mother rather than continuing to work exhausting shifts at the clinic, leaving Svetlana one on one with the dilemma she has been avoiding all her life. Will her decision come from the heart, or result from choosing to obey the laws of nature?
The idea of this film was born 8 years ago, when I was making a documentary about the human brain. At that time I talked a lot with professors from this field, with neurologists. I read many articles on this topic. I have always been convinced that our brain is a unique organ, the capabilities of which are limitless. Imagine my surprise when learned people made me doubt it. The idea shaped itself quickly enough; the only thing left was to come up with the human story. Or rather, stories. These had to be created. And, gradually, the script for the feature film was born. In this film, I am not drawing any conclusions about science. The main task is for the viewer to fell himself/herself in the place of the characters, and how he would behave in their place. And of course, it was necessary to make this project with as low-budget as possible. Only my personal funds were used. The result was a slow, deep, and at the same time — a very simple movie. I hope Vertigo will find its audience!
